Idobi Radio

We had a great time with Caroline Smith in Iowa City and Des Moines this weekend! It's been super fun getting to hit so many of our favorite cities lately. When we were in New York a couple weeks ago we got to talk to idobi Radio during CMJ. Check out the interview that just went up: http://idobi.com/news/2013/11/interview-sleepy-kitty/

Is this that?

Tuesday in DC was one of the BEST shows we've ever played! Thank you to everyone who danced and especially everyone who hollered Bigfoot sounds with us! Geez, I could blush at how good that made us feel. Thanks very much to Alex, Pat, Tony, Vi, Johnny Fantastic and all those moshing stuffed animals for proving the righteousness of the DC scene. We'll be back for sure!

Last night in Philly: The Pretty Greens and Mike Wojciechowski are both righteous bands in completely different ways. Mike's incredibly intimate lyrics are the kind I wish I could write, and The Pretty Greens have Olympia in their blood. Looking forward to blasting the Pretty Greens in the van on our way home!

Tomorrow night: our home in NYC, Pianos, for a night with some heavyweights: We Barbarians, Sacco, and Make Good. Come out come out into the fresh fall air!

Nashville 8/27 at the High Watt

Had fun last night at the High Watt in Nashville with Chrome Pony and Gunther Doug. I'm gotta say, I have loved every band we've played with in Nashville. It was great to see some folks from some of our other Nashville favs Linear Downfall, The Joy of Painting, and Bully last night too. There's a real rad thing happening here right now. Next we head to Lexington, and all through this trip we're going to be keeping a tour diary for Digital Tour Bus. First one just went up! Check it out here!

One Night Only

Thank you St. Louis for showing up big time and making last night's show at the Pageant so wonderful. It was a real pleasure to get to play some of the new songs with our friends Jason Hutto and Natalie Huggins, and to debut "Nothing = You" with The Incurables! We had a great time, and whoever shouted out "63118!" during "Hold Yr Ground" made my night.

Now, we're giddy from last night as we head to Des Moines, Iowa for the Shoot The Chutes Festival tonight. It'll be Sleepy Kitty's first time playing the city and we're looking forward to seeing old favorites from Chicago Maps & Atlases as well as checking out Torches, Annalibera, and of course Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Also, gotta find out what a performance by a band called Prissy Clerks is like. I did an interview with Band Bombshell introducing Sleepy Kitty to Des Moines.  I hope we get to meet them at the show!

At Czar Bar last night in Kansas City

Kansas City, you rocked us. Thanks to everyone who was at the Czar Bar with us last night—it was delicious. And I say that as a guy who showed up feeling sick and lowdown. From Rev Gusto to Empty Spaces to Gentleman Savage to all the people we met last night, it was a favorite night outta town. We'll be back soon, we promise (actually, we'll be in Lawrence even sooner)! Thank you friends.

Columbia Interview

Part 1 of an interview we did in the Columbia Tribune just landed. I gotta say, those were some serious questions—I hope I did em justice. Much love for St. Louis, of course!

Update: Part 2 of the Columbia Tribune interview just went up. Thanks again for some great questions!

Looking forward to our Kansas City show at Czar Bar on August 16! Thanks so much to KC's Jeopardy of Contentment for previewing the show, and also the Larryville Chronicles for this fun interview! And check out the poster that Gentleman Savage got together for the night. Gonna be a good one!

missing, remembering, and appreciating bob reuter

This was the first night Sleepy Kitty had the honor of being photographed by the inimitable Bob Reuter. It was the Tower Groove Records release at El LeƱador and we played right between Warm Jets USA and Maximum Effort (meaning we really had to bring it). It was a great night all around and I saw Bob taking photos right in the front. After the set, I told him I felt like we were finally officially a St. Louis band since we had now been photographed by him. He approved. He's one of our favorite artists, curators, writers. Saturday on our way from Chicago to Iowa City we heard news that he had died in an accident while moving into his new exciting live/work space. He was a total bad ass and also a totally thoughtful guy. I'm thankful we got to know him. Bob, we'll miss your radio shows, your photos, your mysterious online photo collections, and we value your stories, your lessons, and friendship. Wherever you are, I hope there's rock and roll, lots of pretty girls, and a dark room. Congrats on being a true artist all the way.

Would you rather: The Mayonnaise Edition, our first night in Indianapolis

Last night was our first time playing Indianapolis and we had a lovely time at the White Rabbit Cabaret! Real pretty room, feels a little like you might run into William Powell and Myrna Loy.   Huntronik was rad as usual and we got to hear Dan from The Bone Setters do a real cool solo set. Can't wait to hear their new EP. Kudos to Derek from in-store for putting together a great lineup.

We even got the full Fountain Square experience with post show dinner at Peppy's. Looking forward to  dancing and more rounds of the "would you rather" game with Huntronik tonight in Terre Haute, IN.

RFT Music Showcase recap

The RFT Showcase was reliably fantastic this weekend. The skies stayed clear, thank goodness, though we played our version of "Can't Stand the Rain" just in case. Our thanks to the friends and especially family who came out to see it! One of the best parts of playing Rosalita's was getting to hear Jenn Malzone's epic stretch with Town Cars, Middle Class Fashion, and Tight Pants Syndrome across the way at Lucas Park Grill—wow! Also caught sets by Acorns to Oaks, Aquitaine, Foxing, Indian Blanket, Troubadour Dali, Bruiser Queen, Volcanoes, Bug Chaser and plenty more. Check out the RFT Slideshow of the STL music world blowin' right up!

RFT Music Showcase 2013

Here it comes! One of our favorite days each year: the huge, encyclopedic RFT Showcase is June 1. Sleepy Kitty is playing at 6pm at Rosalita's. It's a beautiful spot on an outdoor patio, so we can't wait. Oh, and: the Showcase is the end of the RFT Music Poll. If you haven't yet, check out the impressive list of bands and do some voting, yeah?

Midwest tour w/ Smoker

SK in KC, photo Bryce Olson
Safely returned from tour! And what a week to get out in the world—everywhere we landed, spring was just warming the air. Bless our friends Stephen Paul Smoker for getting into tour as much as we did. Middle of the Map Fest was a wild one; got to catch Pujol (they KILLED IT), Divine Fits, My Gold Mask, Casket Lottery, and a newish Lawrence band called Oils who were particularly awesome. Missed a bunch of other bands we totally wanted to see, like PalaceDots Not FeathersCowboy Indian Bear, and oh about a zillion others, but can't complain. Our set was right after Smoker and we played at midnight to a sold-out room, bless all y'all souls! MOTM is an ideal way to celebrate music and investigate KC at the same time. We're already looking forward to next year!

She just turned 50

50 years ago today The Beatles released Please Please Me on Parlophone Records and the world totally changed forever. The first song on that album is "I Saw Her Standing There," which sounds at first blush like an innocent enough song... but ain't. How could this song sound racier today than it was released? "Your mother should know..."

SXSCity at Off Broadway

Well, I busted my right hand in an ill-considered gesture last week, so last night's show was a one-time-only arrangement of a loop-centric Paige, crucial pal Gabe Doiron on country-tinged guitar, and me on backing vocals with the occasional lefty shaker. Was it fun? Definitely. Will I appreciate getting back behind my drumset? MOST definitely. Check out Paige's opening number. Our thanks to Craig Deeken for catching it:

Memphis

Sun Studio in Memphis
Had a blast in Memphis with Divino NiƱo, La Kaza, and Memphis's Switchblade Kid.  I highly recommend checking them out when they play with Bruiser Queen in STL next month. Also, it was great finding out about the Buccaneer and, of course, Sun Studio!

Chicago Mixtape

Just saw we've been included on the Chicago Mixtape for our show on February 4 at Empty Bottle. It looks like a good mix, and it's going to be a fun show!
